4 Fun Winter Team Building Ideas

The weather is getting colder, the days are getting shorter, and it’s easy for morale to slide. Add some fun back into your workplace by hosting one or more of these winter team building activities.

Hold a Chili Cookoff

Combine some friendly competition with a team lunch for all. Advertise this event a few weeks in advance, along with rules and details. Ask for both entries and judges. Remember, not everyone likes to cook, so make the contest portion optional. Then, either cover the cost for extras like cornbread, plates, silverware, and desserts or send around a potluck sign-up sheet. The winner could receive a small gift or bragging rights.

Schedule a Crafting Session

November and December are a perfect time to set up crafting experiences. Your employees can show off their creativity, learn something new, and even get a head start on holiday gifts. Begin by checking in with your local art or craft supply stores. Many offer classes like chocolate making or wreath design, and some will bring these sessions right to your site. If you are on a budget this year, don’t worry. You can still find lots of low to no-cost projects like these recycled holiday card crafts.

Give Back with Volunteer Days

Volunteering is a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit and to give back to your community. Offer volunteering field trips for any employees who wish to participate. And, as a bonus, keep them on the clock while they help your company spread goodwill. Options may include local food pantries and animal shelters as well as national organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters of AmericaIf you are looking for more ideas, check out aggregate sites like Volunteer Match

Arrange an Outdoor Adventure

Although our first instinct in winter may be to bury ourselves indoors, research shows fresh air benefits us year-roundEncourage your workers to embrace the weather by booking an afternoon of ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, tubing, or fat biking. If your employees aren’t that adventurous, opt for a winter hike instead. And, don’t forget to top off your journey with a warm cup of hot cocoa and maybe some cookies too.
