Research shows organizations with high levels of engagement report 22% higher productivity. So, how can you raise employee morale at your company? Start by creating a better work environment for your staff.
Tips for Creating a Better Work Environment
Invest in Your Physical Space
Would you rather work in a cramped, dark, and dirty room OR in an open, bright, and well-light space? This seems like a no-brainer, and it’s a fact. The physical environment will impact the attitudes of your staff. This doesn’t mean you need to turn your workplace into a five-star resort. Nevertheless, you should design and upkeep a pleasant setting. Items to consider include:
- Breakrooms with tables, chairs, microwaves, and refrigerators
- Bathrooms
- Recreational areas
- Outdoor seating
- Windows and lighting
- Temperature control
- Ergonomic furniture
- Live plants and greenery
Of course, every business is different. One company may build an extensive recreational area with ping pong tables, bean bags chairs, and more. Meanwhile, another organization may only have funds for a small but comfortable breakroom. If you’re not sure what’s possible, begin by setting a yearly budget for your physical plant. This will allow you to not only make regular upgrades but also maintain what you have.
Form a Circle of Safety
According to organizational consultant Simon Sinek, the world’s most successful companies make their employees feel safe. He refers to this as the Circle of Safety. The business world is filled with danger, yet inside the circle, employees feel protected. They aren’t worried about being fired for making mistakes or besting coworkers just to keep their jobs. Instead, they feel like they belong. As a result, they trust management and cooperate with one another to achieve remarkable things. Forming this circle requires strong leadership skills and a degree of unconventional thinking. To learn more, check out this Create a Circle of Safety plan.
Provide Opportunities for Growth
Talented and motivated employees don’t want to take a job and stagnate for 30 years. They want to work in an environment where they learn, grow, and accomplish. Therefore, give your team the resources they need to fulfill these aspirations. Training is a wonderful place to start. You may offer ongoing professional development opportunities, on-the-job training, mentorship programs, tuition reimbursement and/or internal promotions. As with your physical plant, take the time to investigate what works best for your business. For example, you may not have the resources for tuition reimbursement, but your employees may find a robust (yet low-cost) mentorship program is equally valuable.
