Quitting Your Job and Starting Fresh Can Be Scary – Here are 3 Motivating Tips

Your job is driving you crazy, and you don’t know what to do. You could quit, but starting fresh can be so scary. It would probably be easier to stay… if only you weren’t so unhappy.

Are you tired of going around in this circle? Here are three motivating tips to get you back on the road to success.

Your Current Job Won’t Magically Fix Itself.

Ok, so you don’t like your job, but maybe your toxic co-worker will leave? Maybe your boss will give you a surprise promotion? Or, perhaps, things won’t seem so bad next week? In his book, The 4-Hour Workweek, Tim Ferriss asks, “Do you think [your job] will improve, or is it wishful thinking and an excuse for inaction? If you were confident in improvement, would you be questioning things so?” Rather than wasting energy on what Ferriss refers to as “tempting hallucinations,” admit when it’s time to look for something new.

To Move Forward, You Must Be Brave

You may know someone who changes jobs every few years without breaking a sweat. For the rest of us, searching for a new job can be terrifyingPlus, your mind will try to convince you that change is bad. Jon Acuff describes this in his book, Do Over. “In those moments of doubt, fear launches an ad campaign for fine. Your fine life was easier. It wasn’t this hard… Most of us will spend most of our lives walking that same circle. We are afraid of the unknown. We grow stuck in the known. If you genuinely want to make a change, be prepared to tackle fear.

Don’t Worry About Making the Perfect Decision.

Many people put off quitting a job because they worry, “What if my new job is worse?” In all fairness, this could happen. However, your new job could be much better. If you don’t try, you won’t know. On the other hand, you DO see the result of staying where you are. (See Tip #1.) Julie Jansen, author of I Don’t Know What I Want But I Know It’s Not This, warns people not to sit around waiting for the perfect move. She writes, “Deciding finally to do something about being unhappy with your work is one of the hardest decisions you can make in life. But once you have done so, continuing to make small decisions along the way will not only become easier but will also help you feel better.”
